When it comes to top streaming devices today, Roku ranks amongst the top three. Roku TV gives you access to hundreds of entertainment platforms on your Smart TV. The Roku device itself is a USB-like device that you plug into your smart TV. When Roku came out over 10 years ago, the only streaming service available was Netflix. Over time, the platform has grown to accommodate hundreds of similar platforms.
The good thing about the Roku streaming device is that it is free to use. Besides the money spent on buying the device, you don’t have to pay for a monthly subscription to continue using the platform. Unless of course, you want to access premium streaming apps like Netflix that require a monthly payment.
Skype on the other hand is Microsoft’s platform for communication. Even before the platform, many individuals and organizations used the platform for instant communication. On the Skype platform, you can send instant messages, voice calls, and video calls between devices.
Is Skype Available on Roku?
Unfortunately, you can’t download and install the Skype app directly on your Roku. The option available is to use the mirror screening option. The mirroring process differs depending on the device you intend to use. For instance, if you are using an Android smartphone, the process you use is casting to your Smart TV. The process for screen mirroring for different devices is explained in detail in this post.
Setup Screen Mirroring On Roku
Before you try any of the methods below, you need to activate the screen mirroring option on your Roku. Follow the steps below to complete the process.
a. Find the HDMI port on your Smart TV and plug in the Roku device. We mentioned that the Roku device is like a USB. So you won’t have an issue plugging it into your Smart TV.
b. Go to the Home Screen after you turn on your device.
c. From the options on the Home Screen, click on SETTINGS, SYSTEM, then click on SCREEN MIRRORING and finally SCREEN MIRRORING MODE.
d. From the options, choose PROMPT. If you don’t have concerns about your privacy, you can pick the ALWAYS ALLOW option.
Cast/Screen Mirror Skype On Roku Using iPhone and Macbook.
If you are using an IOS enable phone or a Macbook computer, follow the steps below to open Skype and mirror to your Roku.
i. Connect your iPhone or Mackbook and your Roku TV to the same Wi-Fi wireless network.
ii. If you don’t have the Skype app on your Smartphone, download and install the app from the IOS app store.
iii. Find the SCREEN SHARING button on your iPhone and press the button.
iv. If you can find that option, Go to SETTING> CONTROL CENTER >CUSTOMIZE CONTROLS > SCREEN RECORDING.
v. Tap the START BROADCAST option. It will automatically search for available devices. Click on your Roku Device to automatically connect. This initiates the mirror screening process.
Cast/Screen Mirror Skype On Roku Using Window.
Follow the steps below to open Skype on your PC and mirror to your Roku.
i. Connect your PC and your Roku TV to the same Wi-Fi wireless network.
ii. Download the Chrome browser on your PC. If you have the browser already, launch the browser. On the top right of your screen, you will find three settings options.
iii. Choose CAST from the option. It will search for available devices.
v. When you find your Roku device, click Source Drop Down > Cast.
v. Finally, click on your Roku device name to complete the process.
Cast/Screen Mirror Skype On Roku Using Android Smartphone.
If you are using an Android smartphone, follow the steps below to open Skype and mirror to your Roku.
i. Connect your Android smartphone and your Roku TV to the same Wi-Fi wireless network.
ii. If you don’t have the Skype app on your Smartphone, download and install the app from the Google Playstore.
iii. Launch the app, create a Skype account if you don’t have one. If you have an account already, log into your account.
iv. Inside your Skype account, Go to the SETTINGS option. From the options available, select CONNECTION and SHARING.
v. Click on the CAST icon to enable the option. Automatically, your smartphone will commence a search for nearby devices.
vi. After a couple of seconds, you should see your Roku Device name on your phone. Click on it to start the mirroring process.
vii. On your Smart TV screen, you should see your Android phone appear. Click on it to complete the connection process.
